Daily Recap – Sunday, 25 June 2023
Opening day of the 72nd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting: The opening ceremony featured greetings from multiple top-class guests and musical contribution by the Ensemble of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Soon after, the academic programme was kicked off by a Panel Discussion on Diversity and Merits in Science, featuring Nobel Laureates Martin Chalfie, Emmanuelle Charpentier and Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard as well as the two Young Scientists Rasha Shraim and Marwa Shumo. This was followed by lectures of two first-time Lindau participants: Frances H. Arnold, 2020 Chemistry Nobel Laureate, on “Innovation by Evolution: Bringing New Chemistry to Life” and Morten Meldal, 2022 Chemistry Nobel Laureate and 1986 Lindau Alumnus, on “Molecular Click Adventures: A Leap from the Shoulders of Giants”.
Quote of the Day
“I wanted to be an engineer in the biological world and I fell in love with enzymes, because they can do chemistry better than human chemists.”
Frances H. Arnold, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 2018

Fact of the Day
Today is the opening day of the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting. Started all the way back in 1951, it is the 72nd time that Nobel Laureates come to Lindau for an exchange with Young Scientists! Exactly in the middle between the first and today’s meeting, at the 36th meeting, Nobel Laureate Morten Meldal was already in Lindau – as a Young Scientist.
