Jürgen Kluge welcomes guests in Lindau 2019

Guests in Lindau

The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings are not only an impressive experience for the Nobel Laureates and the invited young scientists, but also for the selected guests who are inspired by the atmosphere in Lindau.

The exchange of ideas among the young scientists and their encounters with the Nobel Laureates form the core of the Lindau Meeting. In order to admit as many young scientists as possible from the high-caliber group of international applicants, the number of guests is limited. Many of the sponsors and the escorts of some delegations of our academic partners are part of the meetings and can experience the week at Lake Constance on site.

Our goal is that the guests feel well taken care of already in the run-up to the conference in terms of planning and arrival. On site they will always find contact persons for their questions and wishes.

Guests of the Lindau Meeting

Lindau becomes a focal point of the scientific sphere every summer, but the city on Lake Constance is also a special place independently of this. The winding old town with numerous sights and a bustling harbor promenade is located on an island in Lake Constance. Not only does it overlook Germany’s largest lake – but also some of the peaks of the Alps. The shores of Lake Constance are shared by Germany, Austria and Switzerland, so Lindau’s location in the tri-border region opens up many varied destinations in the surrounding area for visitors. Guests attending the meeting can perfectly combine a scientific programme, relaxation in nature and exploration of the numerous cities around the lake. The programme concludes with an excursion to the western end of Lake Constance. The Mainau is the perfect location to end the intensive week with a final panel discussion before reviewing the memories of the Lindau Meeting at a “science picnic” in the middle of the parks on the flower island.

Commitment of Lindau Citizens at the Meetings

For many citizens of Lindau, the Nobel Laureate Meeting is part of the summer. They are looking forward to the scientists from all over the world enriching the Old Town Island with their presence for a week in the summer. Tickets for the evening Grill & Chill are always sold out quickly. The relaxed barbeque evening is an opportunity for personal encounters between the people from Lindau, young scientists and some Nobel Laureates.

A decisive reason why the invited young scientists feel at home in Lindau is the host families. Many of them have been welcoming the international participants for years and allowing them to take part in family life during the time. This has already created a number of friendships, which are kept alive even after the meetings online or by visits.

The Nobel Laureate Meetings shape the city of Lindau not only during the week of the meeting. The Lindau Science Trail leads people from Lindau and tourists through 21 science stations through the research areas of the Nobel Prizes. Further information on the educational projects of the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings can be found in the section Outreach.

Looking Forward to the Next Meetings

The team of the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings is already looking forward to welcoming guests from all over the world in person again at the next meeting in Lindau in summer 2024.
