Helga Nowotny is Professor emerita of Social Studies of Science, ETH Zurich, and a founding member of the European Research Council (ERC). Since 2007 she was ERC Vice-President and from March 2010 until December 2013 President of the ERC. Currently, she is Visiting Professor at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, Chair of the ERA Council Forum Austria and Member of the Austrian Council. Since 2014 she is a member of the Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings, and in 2015 she became Vice-President.

She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Columbia University, NY, and a doctorate in Jurisprudence from the University of Vienna. She has held teaching and research positions at the Institute for Advanced Study, Vienna, King’s College, Cambridge, University of Bielefeld, Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, Ecole des Hautes Etudes an Sciences Sociales, Paris, Science Center for Social Sciences, Berlin, Collegium Budapest, Budapest. Before joining ETH Zurich, Professor Nowotny was Professor for Social Studies of Science at the University of Vienna. Helga Nowotny has been awarded honoroary doctorates from universities in the UK and in Germany, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands and from the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel. She is Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and of other Academies of Sciences in Belgium, Germany, Italy and Austria as well as an AAAS Fellow. Among other awards, she received the J.D. Bernal Prize for life time achievements.

Helga Nowotny has published widely in social studies of science and technology and on social time. Among her latest books are The Cunning of Uncertainty (Polity, 2015) and Eigenzeit.Revisited (Matthes & Seitz, 2016). She continues to be actively engaged in global research, innovation and education.
