Renewed Warning: “The Half-Life of Our Civilization Is 34 Years”
During the 75th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, three Nobel Laureates in Physics and Chemistry issued an urgent warning about the growing risk of nuclear war and presented concrete policy recommendations to governments worldwide. Their call to action built on the 2024 Mainau Declaration on Nuclear Weapons, signed by 104 Nobel Laureates, and once again placed the issue at the centre of the scientific community’s attention.
David J. Gross (Nobel Prize in Physics 2004), W. E. Moerner (Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2014), and Brian P. Schmidt (Nobel Prize in Physics 2011) participated as members of the Nobel Laureate Assembly in July 2025 for the Prevention of Nuclear War, and brought the recommendations to Lindau, especially to the 600 Young Scientists attending this year’s Lindau Meeting.
