The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings mourn the death of Peter W. Higgs who passed away at the age of 94. Although he had never participated in a meeting, the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings feel a close bond with him: Just during the 62nd Lindau Meeting in 2012, the existence of the Higgs Boson particle was proven at CERN in Geneva (ATLAS experiment), the existence of which Peter Higgs and François Englert had already predicted in 1964.

The very next year, 2013, the two were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics “for the theoretical discovery of a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of subatomic particles, and which recently was confirmed through the discovery of the predicted fundamental particle, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider.”

Peter Higgs was member of the Founders’ Assembly of the Foundation Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings. Council and Foundation will honour his memory and extend their sympathies in these days to his family.
