Daily Recap –Thursday, 3 July 2025

Today, we started directly into an interesting Panel Discussion about “Chemistry’s Pathway to Sustainability.” This was followed by Nobel Laureate Stefan W. Hell to hold a Lecture about his discovery that led to the Nobel Prize. Next in line were two Agora Talks from Avram Hershko and Dan Shechtman. Nobel Laureate Hershko talked about some life lessons he learned from working in science, while Nobel Laureate Shechtman spoke on Crystallography. For the last time at #LINO25, there was the opportunity to ask Nobel Laureates questions in the Open Exchange format or on a Science Walk. The day was rounded off in a festive manner at the Bavarian Evening.
Quote of the Day
“We looked at a flying pigeon and built a Boeing aircraft; we built solar panels that are ten times more efficient than green plants. I believe in 30 or 40 years we can take carbon-dioxide from the air and do CO2 conversion better than plants. I am convinced – evolution did not power airplanes.”
Ben L. Feringa, Chemistry 2016

An intellectual Science Walk with Nobel Laureate Sir M. Stanley Whittingham and a good chat near the shore of Lake Constance, what more could you ask for?
Blog Post of the Day
“The Nobel Prizes — the Good, the Bad, and the Completely Unexpected”
What makes a Nobel Prize truly great? And what are some of its surprising twists and controversies? Today’s blog takes a look behind the scenes of the world’s most famous award.
Fact of the day
The ‘Reinheitsgebot’ (Beer Purity Law) is a series of legislation limiting the ingredients in beer, adopted in Bavaria in 1516. Lindau has been part of Bavaria for a much shorter time – since 1805. Today, we are celebrating not only Bavarian tradition but the many different cultures that have come together at the Inselhalle for #LINO25!
Today’s Highlight Session
The Panel Discussion with Nobel Laureates Steven Chu, Ben L. Feringa, and Sir M. Stanley Whittingham was a combination of chemistry and history. It covered “Chemistry’s Pathway to Sustainability” and the developments that have occurred since the UN adopted the Sustainable Development Goals.
