Daily Recap – Thursday, 28 August 2025

Thursday continued with more inspiring encounters and conversations – as in this case during a Laureate Lunch with Bengt R. Holmström.

Today, we had a total of seven Lectures, covering topics for everyone: instrumental variables methods, election methods, and game-theoretic models of human evolution were just a few examples.

But that’s not all! The Young Scientists once again had the opportunity to present their work in front of an interested audience, including several Laureates. A Panel Discussion explored the topic of policy frameworks for climate action and international cooperation.

Our traditional Heidelberg Lecture, held by Yael Tauman Kalai, was last—but certainly not least.

Quote of the Day

“If you want to understand the limits of AI, start by understanding the limits of human cognition and vice versa.”

Daniel L. McFadden, Laureate in Economic Sciences 2000

Yael Tauman Kalai delivered the Heidelberg Lecture on “Compressing Proofs Using Cryptography“. She had already been engaging with Young Scientists throughout the week.

Blog Post of the Day

The topic of our blog post of the day is Econometrics, Causality & Experimental Methods.

Laureates Joshua D. Angrist and Guido W. Imbens show how modern econometrics moves beyond correlations using new tools from instrument variables to AI to truly measure what works.

Fact of the Day

Our barista pantry ranks just behind the conference programme in popularity! Today, 284 cappuccinos, 107 Americanos, and 108 espressos were enjoyed. Even after what might have been a long night, the drive for economics (and caffeine) remains strong!

Today’s Highlight Session

Today’s Panel Discussion New Approaches to Climate Policies and International Cooperation debated climate policy design that would be effective and the economic and political challenges of curbing greenhouse gas emissions in today’s global context. The panel was joined by Steven Chu, Lars Peter Hansen, Brian P. Schmidt, Joseph E. Stiglitz and Young Scientist Elisa Rottner.
