Daily Recap – Sunday, 30 June 2024
Kick-off for the 73rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting! After weeks of excited anticipation for Young Scientists and Nobel Laureates alike, everybody finally got together in Lindau’s Inselhalle – the main venue for the Meeting. The Opening Ceremony featured greetings from high-class guests including Nobel Laureates Donna Strickland and Steven Chu. Afterwards, the reception presented the first opportunity for Young Scientists to mingle with the Laureates. The day concluded with a dinner, giving everybody the opportunity to wind down a bit after having travelled around half the world to get to Lindau. The Scientific Programme with enganging Lectures, Agora Talks and more formats will be starting tomorrow, so stay tuned for further editions of this Daily Recap!
Quote of the Day
“What no one said but what I keenly felt was that I was the only woman alive with a Nobel Prize in Physics and that distinction carries a lot of responsibility. Now, I’m very happy to say that I’ve gone from being only the third woman to being one of three living women who are Nobel Physics Laureates.”
Donna Strickland, Nobel Laureate in Physics 2018

Fact of the Day
1.365984E+26 attoseconds. This is how long some Young Scientists invited to the 2020 Lindau Meeting that was postponed due to Covid, had to wait to finally come to Lindau in person. For over 600 of them the Council had extended the invitation to the 2020 Interdisciplinary Meeting until their respective discliplines would be featured in Lindau again. 2024 completes the cycle of Meetings on Chemistry, Medicine/Physiology and this year’s focus of Physics which are joined by previously invited Young Scientists.
And, for everybody not that well versed in mental arithmetics: 4 years, 3 months and 28 days!

Steven Chu at the @lindaunobel: “If nature tells you something…listen. if you see something you don’t understand… Think!”. If there was just less bureaucracy eating up all the time that could be used to rotate stones and see what’s behind. 🙃 BD pic.twitter.com/7u4ZDwIGmC
