Attoseconds, Quantum adventures and Future’s Materials: Monday’s start of the Scientific Programme took us for a tour through diverse disciplines of Physics. After engaging Lectures and Agora Talks, Nobel Laureates and Young Scientists swapped places on stage at the Next Gen Science Session where a couple of the young researchers presented their own work on “Artificial Intelligence in Physics”. The afternoon offered ample opportunity for getting to know each other better and discussing both science and personal matters at the Open Exchanges and Science Walks. Exploring the picturesque city alongside a Nobel Laureate and going for coffee and cake after? Only in Lindau! Shortly after, we left Bavaria for a bit to journey around half the world to the host of this Meeting’s International Evening: Texas! Country-Western Dance in front of the Inselhalle and Bullriding in the Foyer were the prelude to an evening filled with music, dance and celebrating with new international friends.
Quote of the Day
“Another thing for the young people: it took me ten years to do one experiment. Today, when you write down a funding application, you have to write down exactly what goal you want to achieve and when you want to achieve it. This would have been completely impossible for me. Maybe funding agencies want to learn something from that.”
Anton Zeilinger, Nobel Laureate in Physics 2022

Fact of the Day
Next Gen Science wasn’t the only Session where young researchers took centre stage today. At the Sciathon Forum three pre-selected groups got to present their projects – developed online in 48 hours by Young Scientists and Lindau Alumni who had only just met. Read about the exciting ideas and projects that came out of the 4th online Sciathon here!
Today’s Highlight Session
One early highlight was the Lecture by 2023 Nobel Laureate Anne L’Huillier who made her debut at a Lindau Meeting. As one of the “Ultra-fast Ladies” (quote Donna Strickland) in Lindau this year she talked about her work in the field of attosecond science.

1.365984E+26 attoseconds, or 4 years, 3 months and 28 days: the time I had to wait to finally attend the Lindau Nobel Laureates Meeting (Physics). Happy to be here! #LINO2024 @lindaunobel pic.twitter.com/fMhO8WDe0l

🗓️Day 1 of #LINO24 (the 73rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting) and the Aussies all managed to snag some great seats for the opening ceremony where we heard from [Lindau Nobel Council President] Countess Bettina Bernadotte, the Ensemble of the Vienna Philharmonic and Nobel laureate… pic.twitter.com/ICyZp46FJj

I got a chance to talk with Sir Konstantin Novoselov, Nobel Laureate in Physics 2010. He now knows about maskless #plasmaprinting at atmospheric pressure 😉 hopefully he can use it in the near future for his materials’ and graphene research! #LINO2024 @lindaunobel pic.twitter.com/fT9Z62Ddo3
