On the Occasion of the 60th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting:

Induction to the Honorary Senate of HRH Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, Christof Bosch and Annette Schavan

Lindau, June 25th, 2010. The organisers of the 60th Meeting of Nobel Laureates, which begins on Sunday, are expecting to welcome 59 Nobel Laureates and 675 young scientists from throughout the world. As part of the opening event on 27 June, the Foundation Lindau Nobelprizewinners Meetings at Lake Constance will be admitting three new members into its Honorary Senate, which brings together personalities from science, business and politics and advises the Foundation Board. The Foundation, whose Founders Assembly includes 232 Nobel Laureates, is honouring Her Royal Highness, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn (Thailand), Dr. Christof Bosch and Prof. Dr. Annette Schavan for their commitment to promoting science and research, as well as dialogue between the scientific community and society.

Her Royal Highness, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, has dedicated herself to the promotion of science and research. Her aim is to make science and research usable so that new opportunities for the future can be created, and in particular through international networking. By admitting her into the Honorary Senate, the Foundation Board is particularly acknowledging her commitment to the next generation of researchers in Thailand – for example, through the participation of young Thai scientists in the Nobel Laureate Meetings.

Dr. Christof Bosch takes a personal interest in education and research for the benefit of the common good. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Robert Bosch Foundation, which, with its programmes for international understanding, provides vital momentum and sets new standards in promoting the next generation of scientists. It is a reliable partner of the Nobel Laureate Meetings, with which it shares the commitment to dialogue between science and society. Dr. Christof Bosch has always played his part in this exchange and has shown consistently great dedication to it. The Foundation Board is acknowledging this by welcoming him into the Honorary Senate.

Federal Research Minister, Prof. Dr. Annette Schavan, sees science and research not as an end in itself, but as a service to society. With her initiatives, she contributes to Germany’s international standing as a centre of science and research. One issue that is always of great importance to her is the dialogue between humanities and natural sciences, as cultivated by the Meetings of Nobel Laureates. By admitting her into the Honorary Senate, the Foundation Board is paying special tribute to her outstanding work for the further development of the Nobel Laureate Meetings. She has always supported and benevolently accompanied the consistent opening up of the Council and Foundation’s "Mission Education” to a dialogue in the interests of sustainability.

From 27th June until 2nd July 2010 the 60th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting brings together 59 Nobel Laureates and 675 young researchers from 68 countries for a week of personal encounters and the exchange of thoughts on the future themes of science and society. The Nobel Laureates allow insight into their recent research, talk about their scientific careers and discuss topics which they consider relevant and important. Apart from the lectures, the student discussions during the afternoons are especially unique for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings. The openness of the scientific dialogue and the joint quest for answers to demanding questions of our times have formed the unique spirit of the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings since the first meeting in 1951. Sustainability, energy and cosmology are the major themes of this year’s interdisciplinary Meeting, which is attended by Nobel Laureates in the disciplines of Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine and Physics.
