Nobel Laureate Gross and young researchers at the 2008 Physics Meeting.

Which Nobel Laureates are participating in the Lindau Meetings?

Nobel Laureates from the respective fields of science are invited to the Lindau Meetings for physiology or medicine, physics, chemistry and the economic sciences. The inclusion of adjoining specialist fields in the mono-thematically organised Nobel Laureate Meetings reflects the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of scientific work.

For example, for a Lindau Meeting in Chemistry, all Nobel Laureates in Chemistry would be invited and about 20 of them would accept the invitation. Additionally, the Council might decide to invite Nobel Laureates from the fields of medicine or physics whose research complements topics covered at the meeting.

Every year, between 15 and 25 Nobel Laureates spend a week in the Lake Constance area meeting young international scientists of tomorrow. They treasure the informal atmosphere, which not only enables, but indeed encourages intense exchange of thoughts and ideas. The special character of the Lindau Meetings is shaped by the fact that the Nobel Laureates can freely choose the topics of their lectures which range from retrospective to current cutting-edge, prospective to blue-sky.

For the interdisciplinary meetings, Nobel Laureates from all three natural sciences are invited. They take place every five years, the 3rd Interdisciplinary Meeting will be organized in 2010. The Council and the Foundation expect about 50 Nobel Laureates to travel to Lake Constance (in 2005, 44 Laureates participated).
